97 Divvi 600S Headshake

My bike has always had a bit of a steering wobble, it can just be felt through the bars when riding, nothing major, just enough to let you know it's there.
However if I fully relax my hands on the bars or let go of both at same time, it rapidly goes into a severe headshake/tankslapper ( 1-2 seconds from nothing to 6" each way before I stop it)
The headstock bearings feel good, no notchiness or overtight/loose.
Front tyre is new and fitted correctly. Rear tyre is also new (and matched)
the forks feel a touch soft (but I am used to my CB 1300 so.......)
Front wheel bearings are also good.......
Am at a loss as to why?

I have been told that all diversions have a bit of a shake to them but this is really excessive. It is the only bike that I cannot ride "hands free"

Any suggestions as to anything that I may have missed etc are welcome

Hi Terry,

This has been given a lot of attention previously and so it would be worth you doing a 'search' to turn up comments which might be of use to you.

In the meantime, do you have an accesories fitted, it seems a Topbox (even empty) can be upsetting to some Divvys? New front tyre, is the wheel balanced OK? It's worth checking as this was a cause of big problems on one bike recently and seemed to take some time to pin down. Most people find Bridgestone BT45's very good on Divvy's but what are you using and have you confirmed the recomended pressures from the makers? When the BT45's go on the pressures need to rise from the standard and 36psi and 41psi seem about the mark for most folk, so other tyres presumably need amended pressures too. I did find my 600 improved with a thicker oil in the forks as they are soft as you say and the oil in mine was like water, so that might be worth a try.

Can't think of anything else for now.

Dont need to worry about the headshake any more.....found a way of cureing it permanently :)

Siezed the friggin engine at 90 on mway this morning :bawling: :bawling:

Anyone got a spare 600 lump knocking about in they're shed/garage???????

Doing 90 on a bike that you know has a steering wobble problem! That's what I'd call suicidal :eek:
You have the ideal opportunity to strip it down and rebuild it now.
Depends on how much of it seized up. If the big ends are gone as well, then forget it, but if it's just pistons and bores, then a rebore and oversize pistons will be a lot cheaper than a replacement engine, provided you do the stripdown and reassembly yourself. You would also need to check that the conrods were not distorted by the seizure as well.
The bits that get hottest would seize up first, so you'd be looking at pistons/bores and valves/valve guides.

As for the wobble, like Andy says - chuck out the existing fork oil and put some 15W in and make sure you fill it to the correct level. It makes a hell of a difference. Also check what setting the rear shock is on. Try jacking it up a couple of notches and see what a difference that makes.
Front tyre is new, but is the wheel correctly balanced ?
A check that you can do yourself - remove the front wheel, then drop the forks out, complete with bottom yoke. Then refit the wheel and front axle to the forks. Stand the forks upside down and spin the wheel fast, then hold onto both fork legs. Is it steady, or do you feel a jerking/rocking motion being transmitted through the forks. If you do, it's a sure sign that the wheel needs balancing.

Never mind, new lump seems to be ok pulled about 80 85 no problem.

Headshake hasn't gone despite doing all the stuff in the other thread that I was pointed to

Ah well looks like i will just have to put up with it

For what I paid for the bike it has been a pretty reliable workhorse,(except of course for monday morning)
By the way that seizure was caused by the sump plug coming out................

why? I dont know, the oil was last changed about a 1000 miles ago and the plug was tight with a new washer.

Advice to buyers traditionally has said 'Check for signs the bike has been raced eg sump plug drilled for wiring'. But I have long wondered if we wouldn't be wise to drill and wire sump plugs on all bikes anyway. At best it would avoid such a big problem with an engine, even better it could avoid the consequences of the oil meeting the rear tyre.

Sorry I can't help with the Headshake, if the above hasn't helped I know nothing more.

There's a note in the manual concerning wheel alignment which suggests that if the front and back aren't correctly aligned you may have a problem with the frame and this woulkd cause severe handling problems. Worth a check out if only to eliminate it from your inquiries.

Wow old thread resurrection !!!!!!!!

That was mad times...….self employed..... poor as...….

was a great little commuter tho, generally doing in excess of 100 miles per day all weathers and finally got chopped in for a new bandit 650.
That got abused also from day 1, booked 1st service for 2 days after collection, ran it for 3 yrs putting 27000 miles on it (while still running the miles up on my cb1300) got knocked off while filtering, had new cams and followers, moved house 3 times etc etc etc.
Now semi retired, looking after disabled wife. Running 3 bikes ( Suzuki gt750 gt250 and a honda nc 750 auto) Having a great life. Nice to have dropped in again.
